WESTMINSTER — The Carroll County Bureau of Aging hosts the sixth annual Seniors on the Go Expo at the Carroll County Agricultural Center in Westminster on Wednesday, Oct. 13. It’s an opportunity to learn about organizations and companies that can assist seniors, get a seasonal flu or pneumonia vaccine, or see some trendy activities geared just for them.
The expo is open from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Danele Shipley Memorial Arena on the Ag Center grounds. Admission and parking are free. Three buses will shuttle visitors from the parking area to the arena and back to their cars.
“About 1,000 people attended last year,” said Patty Whitson, community services supervisor for the county’s Bureau of Aging. She expects more than 100 exhibitors of senior-related services and products to participate this year.
The Carroll County Health Department will offer seasonal flu vaccines, which includes the H1N1 strain this year, and pneumonia vaccines. Last year, staff gave 825 seasonal flu vaccines, according to Doris Hare, R.N., BSN, the health department’s communicable disease manager. To make the process more senior friendly, expo organizers are adding about 150 chairs to the vaccine waiting area. Blood pressure, hearing and balance screenings will also be offered.
In the demonstration area, visitors can see recreational activities available to seniors, such as yoga, Zumba Gold, tap dancing and Pickle-ball, a net game played on a hard court with a Wiffle-like ball and wood paddles. Germ City, a hand-washing station, lets visitors wash their hands and, under special lighting, see the germs left behind. Guest speakers will present information on aging and other relevant topics.
Boxed lunches, provided through federal funding, will be prepared by Meals on Wheels of Central Maryland. Options will include an Italian cold cut or turkey cheddar sandwich. Lunch is free or by donation to guests over age 60; $4.50 for under age 60, said Whitson.
“One new thing we’re trying this year is asking folks to bring a nonperishable food item,” said Whitson. The collected food will be donated to senior centers for those in need and to local food banks.
“This truly is a community event.”
